The public is cordially invited to the Old Edgefield District Genealogical Society meeting on Sunday, May 19th, at 3:00 p. m., in the Edgefield County Council Chambers, 225 Jeter Street, Edgefield, SC. The guest speaker will be Gwen Spivey, an 18th Century Living Historian whose passion for sharing history has led to a decade of presentations in various local, state and national historic sites across the Southeast. From portraying a spy at Colonial Williamsburg's "Under the Redcoat" to public school presentations and previously penning a weekly column for The Edgefield Advertiser entitled "Time Traveler," she has engaged visitors, readers and students alike in the ways of our colonial ancestors.
She will be speaking on “18th Century Textiles and Dyes.” This presentation will cover the most common dyestuffs and textiles available for the 18th Century, from fiber to finished fabric. A powerpoint presentation with a traveling trunk of period correct fibers and fabric, complete with clothing examples will enhance the lecture. After the meeting, light refreshments will be served. The Edgefield County Council Chambers are located at 225 Jeter Street. If you come down Main Street and are facing the Courthouse at the light, please go straight. The Chambers are on the left just past the Courthouse. If you are coming down Buncombe Street, turn right at the light. If you are traveling from Sweetwater Road/Penn Street, turn left at the light. We look forward to seeing you on May 19th!
