Old Edgefield District African American Genealogical Society
Nineteen enthusiastic participants attended the first organizational meeting of the Old Edgefield District African American Genealogical Society (OEDAAGS) held on November 17th, 2005 in the Tompkins Library, 104 Courthouse Square, Edgefield, South Carolina. The importance of creating an African American genealogical society was discussed as well as the need for African American research and the lack of resources available to assist in the research. It was decided that the mission of this new society is to promote and preserve African American history and heritage, especially of the Old Edgefield District. The goals of the society are to collect and distribute African American historical and genealogical materials; maintain a web page; and conduct historical meetings, programs, and seminars related to African American studies.
It was decided that the OEDAAGS will operate as an Executive Committee under the structure of the Old Edgefield District Genealogical Society (OEDGS), which was established in 1985 and is a member of the South Carolina Genealogical Society (SCGS). This arrangement provides African American researchers three distinct opportunities to obtain information on their family history, because individuals who join the OEDAAGS can also become members of the OEDGS and the SCGS at a discounted cost. Therefore, those individuals who choose to be members of all three will receive each society’s newsletter and have full rights and privileges in each.
The total cost of membership in the OEDAAGS is $30.00, while the total cost of membership in OEDAAGS, OEDGS, and SCGS is $45.00 a year (an extra $15.00). The publication for the OEDAAGS is a quarterly newsletter, entitled Homeplace, which is published two times a year. Back issues of Homeplace are available for $4.00 each.
The officers of the Executive Committee include a Chairperson, Co-Chairperson, Treasurer/Membership Chairman, and Secretary.
Program meetings are held throughout the year.
The OEDAAGS currently has 81 members across 22 states and is steadily adding more. For more information, please contact the OEDAAGS at 803-637-4010 or OEDGS85@gmail.com.
